General Information

Harare (previously known as Salisbury until 1982) is Zimbabwe's capital and is located in the Mashonaland East Province.  Harare is the centre of commerce and government with many attractions.  The University of Zimbabwe, the largest higher learning institute in the country, is situated in Harare.

It is a very laid-back city, with high-rise office buildings and a medley of shopping opportunities.  The area around the site of the State House on Chancellor Avenue, is completely off limits.  It is best as a visitor to the country's capital, that this area be avoided even when the booms are raised.  You are forbidden to take photographs here.

The city is modern and well-planned out with tree-lined avenues.  The Anglican and Roman Catholic cathedrals, a Dutch Reformed church, the Queen Victoria Memorial Library and Museum are all popular places to see.

Harare has a moderate climate, and rainfall varies from year to year.  It is the centre of rail, road, and air transport, with an international airport.  Harare is also the main dispersal point for the agricultural produce of the surrounding area.
