Chirundu
General Information
Chirundu is a village in the Mashonaland West region of Zimbabwe. Zambia and Zimbabwe are joined here by the striking Otto Beit Bridge (no photos are allowed to be taken). This border post village is located on the banks of the Zambezi river, and lies in the hot Zambezi Valley. Chirundu is overlooked by impressive hills from which there are spectacular views.
The bridge is the primary border crossing for travellers from Harare in Zimbabwe, to Lusaka in Zambia.
Accommodation in Chirundu
The town itself is not a tourist destination and has lost its charm due to the large number of haulage trucks queuing to make the border and bridge crossing. However, slightly away from town along the Zambezi River, there are some nice-looking accommodation options and fishing camps which welcome visitors. Please view our Accommodation Directory for more information on what is available in the area.
Activities in Chirundu
Chirundu is surrounded by wildlife and safari areas. Wildlife, in particular elephants, commonly wander around the village, and appear to not be bothered by people. It is normal to see an elephant drinking from a swimming pool in Chirundu!
Although with the massive increase in traffic at the border, animals are not seen as much these days. Chirundu is a popular fishing destination, especially for Tigerfish which is excellent here.
Please view our Activity Directory for more information on things to do in and around Chirundu.
Businesses
Chirundu's business community is basically around the border post. However, there are a few shops, stalls and souvenirs in the vicinity. Please go to our business directory for a full list of businesses you can find in the region.
