Kariba
General Information
Kariba (meaning 'trap' from the Shona word Kariwa) is situated in the Mashonaland West Province of Zimbabwe. Zimbabweans more so than tourists, flock to Kariba to spend their leisure time fishing, boating and relaxing at the dam.
The small town extends along the lakeshore, with beautiful views and often elephants will be seen coming through. The main road leads to the dam wall, which connects the Zimbabwe-Zambia border. Best advise either the Zambian or Zimbabwean immigration officials you are there, to avoid paying extra visa fees.
During summer months Kariba can hit temperatures as high as 42 degrees with frequent rain and stifling humidity. Lake Kariba is has approximately 25,000 crocodiles in its waters, so swimming is not an option!
