Victoria Falls
General Information
Victoria Falls is a small town in the Matabeleland North Province of Zimbabwe. It is situated on the southern bank of the Zambezi River, at the western end of the Victoria Falls itself.
Victoria Airport is approximately 18 km south of the town and is internationally linked to Johannesburg and Namibia.
The settlement in the town began in 1901 when the possibility of using the waterfall for hydro-electric power was explored. The town expanded when the railway from Bulawayo reached the town just before the Victoria Falls Bridge was opened in April 1905. The bridge connects Zimbabwe to Zambia.
Victoria Falls is the main tourism centre for the falls and is the one place where visitors are never bored. There are a huge number of activities on offer and you will be occupied from sunrise until sunset. Despite being a tourist hub the town has low buildings and leafy avenues, with a laid back relaxed approach to things.
The falls experiences peak flood season, which is during March and April when it is in its full glory, with masses of water cascading down into the river below which creates a spectacular cloud of spray - sometimes seen up to 80 km away! The dry season is between November and December when the amount of water that flows over the falls decreases until only small rivers of water can be seen. It is during this time that tourists can really experience the true magnificence of the falls.
